About

While not a professional psychologist, Elizabeth West aka angelofdevs does possess degrees in psychology and early childhood development. This blog focuses on the psychological disorders of women featured on The Real Housewives series shown on Bravo TV. The author can only analyze behaviors she has witnessed during viewing or from reliable sources, such as court documents, so take all conclusions with a grain of salt. The bloganalysis featured here is intended for entertainment purposes only, mostly the authors personal entertainment.

Thanks to The Real(ly) Old Housewife, author of the terrific blog at thereallyoldhousewivesofmanateecounty.blogspot.com
for making me this lovely crown with titles inspired by critics of my blog. She has crowned me the queen of misogyny and ableism, tongue in cheek of course.

Here are some other blogs/sites I like reading that also feature posts about the Real Housewives.

You have completely nailed them. Please, please, please, LuAnn next… And then could you move on to Alexis in OC and her husband Jim?

    • Mara says:

Just wanted to say that this is great info! You’ve written some really interesting things. I think you’re spot on, except maybe about Bethenney cooking dinner on the trip. I think she was just trying to give a “gift” to Ramona, like Kelly who took photos, Alex who gave a bridal shower and Sonja gave the manicures.
Anyway, I’m so interested in what you think of Alex. She seems pretty normal, at least she’s getting more okay as the show progresses. And Ramona’s a pretty successful woman, but sometimes she is so out of line.
Thanks for the informative website and lots of interesting reading!

      • goldenapple says:

I agree with Mara and want to second – and add to – her thoughts about Bethenny during the trip. Bethenny is a consummate strategist and multitasker (I DON’T mean that in a snarky way); for her, cooking on the trip served multiple ends.
        (1) It was the greatest, most heartfelt gift Bethenny could possible give to a richer woman who could buy whatever she wanted (I hope Ramona and the others appreciated that sincerely sweet gesture).
        (2) It was a relatively economical, yet upscale gift for someone to share among the honoree and multiple others who enjoyed it. “Tasteful” move, from someone who was not yet “rolling in dough” (puns intended). Remember, Bethenny had stated that the season before she couldn’t pay her rent; moreover, the extremely modest car she branded with the “Skinny Girl” logo reflects her fiscal restraint at the time she bought it.
        (3) Cooking a gourmet meal and serving Skinny Girl drinks on-air further cemented in the minds/eyes of the audience that Bethenny is a professional chef/cookbook author and the creator of Skinny Girls drinks. Nice way to underscore that point – literally in your face (i.e., on tv) – without being obnoxious about it.
        (4) As a corollary to #3, Bethenny proved she’s got real talent, unlike some other reality TV personalities all across the TV dial.
        Brilliant!

Oh, and by the way Sue and others who didn’t like my more critical comments about Bethenny in another thread on this site (circa June 9, 2010): I’m NOT Jill or Kelly or on anyone’s team, I’m NOT jealous of Bethenny, I “get” her quick-witted sense of humor (although I think it often reveals her insecurities, mean streak, and need to be seen a certain way), and I’m well aware of both her successful strategems for becoming famous, marketable, and wealthy (even though I don’t have to agree with all of them) and of her earlier, less successful ones discussed in such articles as, “Bethenny Frankel conveniently forgot she did trashy nude sex scene in 1994 (pics)” and “PHOTOS – Bethenny Frankel’s Nude Acting Past Revealed!.

    • I’m not a professional, but Alexis is completely controlled by Jim. He berates her in public, which she takes – and he picks out where she goes, what she can do…it’s sickening. But he must have a lot of money, because she gladly seems to go along with everything. Money is Power!

  2. Parke says:

Very interesting site – I wondered why I disliked Jill so much and, after your explanations, it all makes sense. It’s all of that ego showing; she only cares about herself and if she’s not the center of attention she’s not interested. . .

  3. megan.rank says:

    WELL DONE! Keep it up!

  5. Christian says:

i think you should do kim from atlanta next, she CLEARLY has histrionic personality disorder. if anyone in the world is the poster child for that disorder, it’s her.

  6. angie says:

i’m interested in what you have to say about bethenny, luann & alex. i think they’re all fairly normal (at least compared to kelly, jill, & ramona) but they do have their tendencies.

  7. Sapphic Persuasion says:

I’m loving this and hoping you keep posting!

  8. angelofdevs says:

Thanks for all the great comments! I will try to keep up. I am doing all my homework to ensure the most accurate bloganalysis possible.

  9. IsabellaG says:

Sorry to disagree, Christian, rather than Kim, I think Bethenny has the Histrionic Personality Disorder. I’m gonna stick my neck out there and say Kim, “Narcissist”, all the way.

  11. Karen says:

KSS has a PSA about systemic bullying. I have no words, but thought you might have something to say:

    http://jezebel.com/5553424/kelly-bensimon-films-psa-about-housewives-bullying

    • angelofdevs says:

I don’t feel Kelly was bullied. Kelly herself lashed out at all of the women and having no clue what was going on, they responded to it. Sonja Morgan in particular tried her very best to help Kelly in every way she could. People with paranoid personality disorder see things in a very skewed way from what is reality. I hope Kelly stops with her *spin* and finds the mental help she needs.

I don’t feel bullying is ever ok for the record but whatever was said to Kelly on this trip was provoked by what Kelly was saying and doing. I don’t think Kelly’s behavior was at all rational given the circumstances as the women saw it. I think the ladies realized pretty late in the game that Kelly had a legitimate psychological problem but when they did realize it they all backed off quickly.

  12. Hey there, interesting stuff! I would love to talk to you about doing an interview for Cafe Mom’s “The Stir”. E-mail me to discuss the details.

    Thanks!

  13. Sticks says:

These shows and your blog and the comments are so compelling because it reminds me that these people have disorders. We all have co- workers or family members who are confusing, frustrating and confounding. We are trying to figure out how to deal with them and the show and this blog opens up new discussions.

People with disorders are of both genders obviously, but I wonder what you think about that. It seems men keep a lot of these things under their hat until they blow up and go on a shooting spree. Do you think that is a generalization?

  14. Meadow says:

Love your assessments. Can you please analyze Theresa from RHONJ? I just read that her house has been foreclosed on, and yet in every episode she is shown dropping thousands of dollars (cash) on everything from clothes for her girls to furniture to jewelry. What’s that about? And what about the whole stage mother aspect?

    • Carlinemom says:

Hey (by the way, LOVE this blog and its smart insight) – Teresa’s goombah-licious house was actually not foreclosed on. It was one of many investment properties that she supposedly owns. She owed about $127K for it. I am not sure why exactly she couldn’t meet the payments or balloon payment or whatever – or if they let it go for some other reason. So my information probably not very helpful! On the cash that Teresa drops — is it possible that Bravo gives them spending cash sometimes. The amount of cash that all of them drop – including Jill on one episode when she went shopping with her daughter – is surprising! Wouldn’t one just carry a credit or debit card?

Oh – yes, please analyze Luanne. Also, please, please, please – Tamara. I am always interested that Tamara’s husband wasn’t the big meanie she now claims when he was dropping thousands to pay for jewelry, trips, surgery and yacht parties. When he lost his cash, all of a sudden she’s a victim of domestic abuse? Huh?

  15. Marybelle says:

God – they are all HORRIBLE. The only HW I like is Sonja ( I have a soft spot for Ramona too for whatever reason she seems like a real person albeit a little wackadoo). Every time I watched any of these shows I would wonder – are they really this insane and terrible or is bad editing? I still cannot believe anyone would really act like this knowing it is being recorded for all of America to see. But then the incidents with Kelly and Danielle happened… YIKES!

I think this blog is great fun and I will pass it along to my friends who watch. Awesome analysis! This blog like Richard Dawson’s recaps is actually more fun than the shows. Thanks!

  16. Cougar says:

PLEASEEEEEEEE DO MORE!!! You should teach a class based on these women.

  17. WebWiseWoman says:

    Excellent blog!

  18. Blondie says:

I love your blog! Please keep analyzing!!

  19. FanFan says:

Okay, you must do one on Kim Zolciak, Simon and Tamra Barney, and Slade Smiley!!!!!!!

  20. sweetviolet54 says:

I’ve been hoping someone with a degree in psychology would “diagnose” these women. I”ve been doing it on my own…minus degree..since the series began! I could be wrong about this, but it just seems the very nature of being willing to sign up for a program inviting people, to basically, critique your life, and maybe your relationships for the world to see…just is beyond “crazy”!! I personally can’t think of anything more horrifying!! And,yes I am a card carrying diagnosed Bi-polar, so I clearly understand crazy!! (smile) Perhaps, this will bring more healthy conversation and understanding of the disorders and diseases of the mentally ill. Whether this means people seeking treatment or families of the mentally ill understanding and doing away with the stigma…I applaud your effort to open up the conversation…I’m certainly entertained!

  21. karrylin says:

Love your blog and have bookmarked it to make sure I find it and read every word!
My guilty pleasure is Bravo channel shows, but mainly the Housewives, all seasons, all cities, and the new cities will be no exception!!
You have much insight into the human mind, and behaviors and that makes this, the best thing written about any of the Housewife shows! Most informative, but also entertaining. I honestly like the women for the most part, except for a few……and their wacky ways! Not that wacky is bad…it can be quite interesting! Also, dangerous. This year, I think Danielle on NJ show, is someone to be watched at all times, off camera as well as on. She seems to be headed for something bad. Sure her bahavior and mouth is all “bad” but I think its headed “somewhere” that she or someone else will wish had never happened. I realize they have been filmed already but I dont think she turns off the crazy when the cameras stop rolling.
anyway, thanks for this, it is a real addition to the enjoyment of the Housewives on Bravo!
    karrylin

  22. julie says:

Love your blog! I stumbled across it while researching what a nut job Danielle is! And actually I’m able to diagnose my ex-husband now (purely for entertainment only, of course!). Can’t wait to read more of your entertaining (and spot-on) blogs/analysis/diagnoses.

  23. Kayel says:

Noticed only positive comments. I too have a degree in psych. I have been a practicing counselor since 1990. Generally, your comments make a good deal of sense, but I wish you would talk more about personality ‘characteristics/tendencies’ etc. & not actually give diagnoses. There are many legitimate reasons why you should avoid diagnosing– major one being that you are just seeing a ‘made for T.V. viewing’ segment of any ‘real housewife’s’ personality. Make your ‘disclaimer’ more specific by stating what level of psychological training and accreditation is needed to diagnose mental health disorders.

    • angelofdevs says:

You have just done that quite well for me thanks.

I have never claimed to be a mental health professional but I happen to like doing this blog, it makes me think and I hope it makes others think too. I like that others add their opinions too and I really do not care if they are professionals either. Human beings are allowed to use the tools at their disposal to figure out what is going on in front of them, to make sense out of what they see. I do have a bachelor’s degree in psychology from an accredited university and yes I have even taken a few courses towards a master’s degree.

I have given the necessary disclaimers in my opinion. With your addition I am sure everyone with a bit of sense is well aware I am not a licensed psychologist.

    • mayfly says:

As a new grad student in psych, I am enjoying this blog. However, one must take into consideration possible substance abuse which can induce or exacerbate certain behaviors. That said, very enjoyable blog.

  24. Woo Hoo! Look at all the comments! You don’t need no Jezebel- you go girl!

  25. Abuela says:

I have so enjoyed reading your Blog! . . . I was fortunate to have discovered it while searching for viewer comments about the personalities of the women of the various “Housewives” franchises. The continuing interactions of these players is a study in modern-day human behavior that is hard to resist, even with the requisite editing. Routinely, episodes leave me with varying degrees of confusion and/or disappointment. Some of the relationships (i.e., Alex/Jill, Bethenny/Jill, LuAnn/Jill, Kelly/Bethenny, Danielle/Dina) cause me to wonder what ever happened to basic human kindness? It seems there is too much self-centeredness and lack of empathy in the world today.

I found your indepth descriptions of the nature, root causes, manifestations and progression of certain “Housewives” behaviors to be extremely informative. Thank you for giving me clearer insight into these behaviors, and for providing me tools with which to understand them. I look forward to al of your future installments and appreciate your insightful commentary.

  26. Maria says:

Very good information-many people forget that disorders do exist quite commonly as a matter of fact. The only thing I have been wondering since I had some training and awareness about this is why I see people like this getting farther ahead in the employment world or now being given a tv platform complete with financial incentives, connections, and increased fame as a result of being messed up. Real Houseiwves, the Orlando Bloom burglar, Bad girls, etc, etc…I’d like to do a study to satisfy my own curiosity about how we have come to be a society that rewards bad behavior. First I need to get a little famous, sleep with a married man, overspend, file for bankruptcy, steal something, and land a realty tv show. Until then I am free…

    Hello:

I stumbled onto your blog this morning and love it. After the episode in which Jill said she got a “google alert” I quickly googled and now get the alerts. It is how I found you. More important I am pleased to know my thoughts about Bethenny (love her), Kelly (in desperate need of help) and Lu Ann (bitch) are valid. I have read lots of stuff that seem to give Kelly a pass and suggest the other housewives are mean to her. Bethenny’s “now you f*****g get it moment” on scarey island when she was speaking to Ramona and Alex was priceless. I was clapping in my living room. I wish I had a telephone line direct to Andy Cohen during the reunion. Lu Ann in her patronizing way told poor Kelly that she told her not to go. However, the clip of Lu Ann telling Jill not to go to scarey island was not shown or even mentioned. Lu Ann just sat smugly on the couch during the reunion and (now that I have read your characterization) gave the impression of floating above the fray. It disturbs me that Ramona and Bethenny apologized to Lu Ann. It makes them better people but it gave Lu Ann a pass for her behavior. I don’t know if “snake” is the correct noun but I don’t care for her. Among the snips in last nights lost footage was a reunion conversation about putting people on speaker phone. Jill and Lu Ann were co conspirators. Ramona called and Jill didn’t let her know Lu Ann was listening and Bethenny called and even though she inquired about being on speaker phone Jill would not admit to having Lu Ann in the room. This was so “classic mean girl” behavior. Alex was precious and correct when she made the statement: Alex is working in Brooklyn and Jill is in high school. I had to remind myself after last nights show that it is television and if Jill and Lu Ann get nailed for their bad behavior there won’t be another season. The three part reunion that was televised was the tip of the iceberg and although wet and wild it was obvious from the lost footage that the best stuff was left out.

In closing I would just love to say that time will tell but I do think Sonja is a joy. Ramona, Alex and Bethenny get my vote. I really hope someone puts Kelly in a padded room. May Jill and Lu Ann go on an extended day trip for lunch and get lost on the way home.

One more thing. I positively love Bethenny getting married?

    Hi Elizabeth!

I want to just check in quickly to thank you, so much, for your great care in building these assessments. I will send a link of your site to my sister (she’s watched all the RH shows, still does) and others I know who watch. I think that reality TV and the RH franchises in particular are reaching a crisis point, in terms of both casting and what the producers choose to air. I don’t know where it will end.

The issue that I have with the current pitch of what viewers see as “drama” (but what I see as cast members’ mental issues) is that some of it is organic, the Jill Zarin/Danielle Straub type, and would occur whether the cameras were there or not. People like these women feel better when they make certain others feel worse; there is nothing anyone else can do about that.

What concerns me is the role viewers may be playing in what happens to other cast members. What I hear about Caroline Manzo makes me think that she is a real woman at a difficult point in her life, and the presence of the show might intensify that difficulty. Is this fair? Do we make fragile people worse off by watching them on TV? I wonder.

Anyway, thanks again. Your blog is a brave voice in an important conversation!

  30. Hi,
Love this site, and watch all the shows, especially the New York gals. What I would like to know is, are there cures for these diseases the women have? I don’t think that has been addressed, but , for example, can Caroline and Bethenny be cured or treated for the obsessive compulsive disorder? They are both very sharp tounged, and don’t seem to take suggestions well.
    Thank you

    • angelofdevs says:

Treatment for OCPD normally involves psychotherapy, cognitive behavioral therapy or cognitive analytic therapy is an excellent idea. Discussions with a psychotherapist ways of changing compulsions into healthier, productive behaviors is very helpful. Medication alone is generally not indicated for this personality diisorder but anti-anxiety medication may reduce feelings of fear, anti-depressants can ease frustration, reducing stubbornness and negative rumination. Either may be prescribed. ADD medication can improve task completion in some cases by improving mental focus, which will provide visible success and improve outlook for recovery so that may be indicated in some cases too.

Great website! I am also a mental health professional with a masters in clinical counseling psychology and currently pursuing a PhD in clinical psychology. One of my guilty pleasures is watching the real housewives series and I also have noticed that many of them display traits of different mental disorders. One thing I would like to mention, is that I have noticed you have a tendency towards certain diagnoses (Obsessive personality personality disorder, overall tendency with personality disorders). You have given 3 seperate housewives, that I have noticed, Obsessive Compulsive personality disorder. That personality disorder usually isn’t diagnosed that often, and I do disagree with giving that diagnosis to these women.

Otherwise, your website is fun to read and I enjoy it. Keep up the good work!

i am dying for someone to analyze Elizabeth.

  35. Boxwood says:

I agree with Rachel! Am dying for you to give your analysis of Elizabeth on the Bachelor Pad. If you decide to take that one on you should check out the footage not just from the current Bachelor Pad but from her time on Jake Pavelka’s season of The Bachelor (just ended about 7 months ago or so). She had really dark hair at that point and claimed that she didn’t kiss someone until there was a relationship. But times have changed let me tell you!!!! Now, only a few months later, she’s quite blond and she’s changed her attitude about other things as well. . . I don’t really think her attitude has changed; I think she says whatever she thinks she needs to say to get what she wants. She gives me the CREEPS. Anyway, I would love to hear your analysis –

I wonder whether you watch “The Rachel Zoe Project”. I’ve been observing her as she presents herself on the show and she seems PAPD to me — with some histrionic thrown in. If you watch the show, do you have any thoughts?

Again, thanks for your blog. I’ve learned a great deal and have become a better observer because of you.
